Show #2 Transcription is below.

Host Julian:

Hey, welcome back to the Uptown Upland Show. Guys, my name’s Julian V. I’m your host, and in this show we’re all about featuring local businesses here in Upland. But more importantly, finding out the stories behind those businesses and what makes Upland such a great place to live. And today we’re in front of little village. It’s an indoor playground for kids. It’s started by two moms and they have a fantastic story. So we’re going to head inside and learn a little bit more about their place.

Host Julian:

Welcome back guys to the uptown Upland show. Today we are at the beautiful facility of the little village here in downtown Upland and it’s basically an indoor playground. And I’m with Cathy and Nicole. They are two mothers that decided that they needed a place for their kids to play because this is what you guys kind of did in your backyards what I understand. So tell me a little bit more about how you used to do this in your backyard and how that came to be.

Cathy:

Well we always took our kids everywhere. We wanted them to experience everything, different playgrounds, different play places. We wanted to them to do a lot of pretend play. And in our backyard we had a pool, we had a Playhouse, we made a sandbox area. All like things that we wanted the backyard to be a playground for our children. And from there I was just like trying to figure out something. We’re cause I’m a stay at home mom. I wanted to work as well and I wanted my kids to be part of it. So I was like talking to my husband, I want to make something that involves our kids. How about we already did a playground at home. Why don’t we make a playground for all kids to enjoy that we, our kids can make friends and we can bring kids together in a place where we can socialize and play. And then I brought the idea to Nicole and she said, let’s do it.

Host Julian:

She called you and she’s like, Hey, you know what? You know, we always play in the backyard. Like I have this idea like what were your thoughts?

Nicole:

Basically she’s crazy. I’m a little bit, I was just like, Oh, I think we can do it. After she mentioned that it was getting together and you know, just coming up with different ideas and after the ideas came we started, you know, designing and we’re like, are we really gonna do this? Then I think after that we were like, yeah, 100% in.

Host Julian:

And you guys are sister-in-laws, so your husband’s like, what was it like

Kathy:

I had a conversation with my husband first and his opinion matters a lot. We’re really close. We have a good relationship. We’ve been together for almost 20 years. So we were like, I was telling him about it and he said, let’s do it. And at first I thought he was going to be, you’re crazy. but he didn’t say that. He said, let’s do it and let’s talk about it. Let’s kind of create a plan. Then we’ll bring on the others in. Cause I thought Nicole would be a good partner with me. Very family oriented. We play with our kids and stuff.

Host Julian:

And here we are. So we’re going to talk a little bit about the playground, but if people want to find information about this place, like where do they, what can they go to find your guys’s information?

Kathy:

They can find us on Instagram. They can find us on Facebook. We also have a website and we’re located here in beautiful downtown.

Host Julian:

Awesome. So as we look around, there’s a lot of different, what do you guys call these? The houses. Play houses. Okay. Play houses. So there’s all kinds of different ones from hospitals that firehouse, the little village diner. How’d you guys come up with all of these?

Kathy:

We wanted a place like a pretend place that, where the kids can come in and be like, wow, this is my town. This is my city. This is my village. When I was younger I always wanted to create a little village, just a bunch of little houses, little diners and stuff, put it together. But this one, this time I was like play houses. That would be great. And yeah, just the ultimate Playhouse village. We wanted a place where kids can expand their minds, grow imagination.

Nicole:

And you guys, you were telling me that like when the kids come in here and we all know, cause I have kids too and they’re like super shy and they don’t talk, but you know, as soon as they start to get involved into like this grocery store right here, it kind of just opens them up.

Cathy:

Yeah. Or they interact with each other. My kids are always here too and it’s helped them a lot with their socialization. Kids come in, they play with them, then the kids start playing with other kids and it’s been helpful.

Host Julian:

And so like where we’re, we’re kind of sitting, so like what have parents do when they come in here? Like what, what do they do?

Kathy:

They either go play themselves with their kids or they just sit back in our little lounge area that we have or they can just watch over everything. Some parents even work here. Yeah. So, yeah. So we have wifi to do work.

Host Julian

Yeah. How long have you guys been here? Three months. Three months. And how’s it been? Pretty good. Pretty good. I know you guys told me it was like really busy or it’s been really busy. So

Nicole:

Yes, Word of mouth is how a lot of social media is awesome.
